Spanish donkeys / Espanjalaiset aasit

Between 2005 and 2009, I spent a lot—really a lot—of time in Spain. I spent Christmases, Easters, and parts of the summers and autumns there.

Why?

The warmth, the Mediterranean, the mountains, and of course the damn good training terrain. We also filmed a documentary for the commercial channel, “Pitkä matka” (“The Long Journey”), there in 2008.

Between training sessions we wandered around the outskirts of the village. That’s where we found an animal sanctuary run by a former British soldier. There were horses, dogs, cats, pigs… and donkeys.

I became friends with Jim. I brought bagfuls of food for the animals and even donated some money to the sanctuary.

And on top of that, I adopted several Spanish donkeys from there.

I didn’t bring them to Finland; they got to stay in their home region. I paid a certain amount for the adoption and received a certificate for it.

In fact, I even adopted a few donkeys on behalf of my friends 🙂

And that’s not all.

When I left for my adventure trip to the North Pole, I raised money for Jim’s sanctuary in connection with it.

I got a bit… well actually quite a lot of laughter and teasing because of it. “Oh, you’re raising money for Spanish donkeys. Couldn’t you think of anything dumber?”

Well, you have to do things that feel meaningful to you.

And the donkeys did.

Vuosien 2005-2009 välisenä aikana vietin paljon, siis todella paljon aikaa Espanjassa. Siellä meni joulut, pääsiäiset, osat kesästä ja syksystä.

Miksi?

Lämpö, Välimeri, vuoret sekä tietenkin hemmetin hyvät harjoitusmaastot. Kuvasimme siellä myös maikkarin dokumenttia “Pitkä matka” vuonna 2008.

Treenien välissä liikuskelin kylän laitamilla. Löysin sieltä brittiläisen ex-sotilaan ylläpitämän eläinten hoitokodin, jossa oli hevosia, koiria, kissoja, possuja….sekä aaseja.

Ystävystyin Jimin kanssa. Vein hoitokotiin kassitolkulla eläinten ruokaa ja lahjoitin sinne hieman fyrkkaakin.

Kaiken kukkuraksi, adoptoin sieltä useamman espanjalaisen aasin.

En tuonut niitä Suomeen vaan ne saivat elää “kotiseuduillaan”. Maksoin adoptiosta tietyn summan ja sain siitä todistuksen.

Itse asiassa, adoptoin muutaman aasin myös ystävilleni:-)

Eikä tässä vielä kaikki.

Kun lähdin Pohjoisnavan seikkailumatkalle, niin keräsin sen yhteydessä rahaa Jimin hoitokodille.

Sain siitä hieman…no oikeastaan aika hemmetin paljon naureskelua ja kuittailua osakseni. “Aha, keräät rahaa espanjaisille aaseille. Etkö keksinyt mitään tyhmempää”?

No, pitää tehdä sellaisia asioita, jotka kokee itselleen merkitykselliseksi.
