Sään ennustaminen / Weather forecast

Katsoin 10 päivän sääennustetta, jonka mukaan kipakat pakkaset ovat seuranamme täällä eteläisessä Suomessa ainakin seuraavat 10 päivää. Tätä kirjoittaessa ulkolämpömittari näyttää -19C

Vielä joulukuussa pitkän ajan ennusteet kertoivat, että eteläisen Suomen talvesta on tulossa poikkeuksellisen leuto, mutta toisin siis kävi.

No, talvi on vasta aluillaan, joten sää voi kehittyä vielä suuntaan tai toiseen.

Reissujen, etenkin jäätikköseikkailujen aikana seuraamme useaan kertaan päivässä sääennusteita ja katse on usein kohdistettu taivaalle, jotta voimme reagoida ripeästi mahdollisiin sään muutoksiin.https://yle.fi/a/3-6589524

Käytän jäätiköillä mm. meteorologin palveluja.

Hyvä ystäväni Marc De Keyser työskentelee puolet vuodesta Etelämantereella/Union Glacier meteorologina ja hän jos kuka tuntee jäätikkösäiden metkut.

Marc lähetti mm. Grönlannin jäätikölle kolme sääennustetta päivässä, joten olimme erittäin hyvin tietoisia mahdollisista sään muutoksista.

Jäätiköllä sää voi muuttua hyvinkin nopeasti, kun taas hiekka-aavikolla sää on hyvin ennustettavaa; aina on kuivaa ja kuumaa:-)

I looked at the 10-day weather forecast, which shows that bitterly cold temperatures will be with us here in southern Finland for at least the next ten days. As I write this, the outdoor thermometer reads −19°C.

Back in December, long-term forecasts suggested that the winter in southern Finland would be exceptionally mild, but clearly that was not the case.

Well, winter is only just beginning, so the weather may still develop in one direction or another.

During trips—especially glacier adventures—we check weather forecasts several times a day, and our eyes are often fixed on the sky so that we can react quickly to any potential changes in the weather.

On glaciers, I also make use of meteorological services.

A good friend of mine, Marc De Keyser, works half the year in Antarctica as a meteorologist at Union Glacier,and if anyone knows the tricks of glacier weather, it’s him.

For example, Marc sent three weather forecasts per day to the Greenland ice sheet, so we were extremely well aware of any possible changes in the weather.

On a glacier, the weather can change very rapidly, whereas in a sandy desert the weather is highly predictable: it is always dry and hot 🙂
