Sääennusteet – totta vai hyvää viihdettä/ Weather forecasts -truth or just good entertainment?

Retkikuntatyö ei eroa merkittävästi vaikkapa firman pyörittämisestä.

Otetaan yksi esimerkki.

Yritysjohtajat lukevat ja analysoivat erilaisia ennusteita, joiden avulla pyritään navigoimaan karikoiden ja myrskykeskusten ohi.

Retkikunnat..tai ainakin ne, joissa minä olen ollut mukana… operoivat varsin haastavissa olosuhteissa.

Myös meidän on vältettävä karikot, muuten ei kunnian kukko laula.

Sääennusteiden saaminen on – varsinkin jäätikölle – ihan ehdoton juttu.

On myönnettävä, että nuo maailmalla vietetyt 20 vuotta ovat jättäneet jälkensä.

Seuraan täällä kotimaisemissakin (Nuuksio, Suomi) haukkana sääennusteita.

Joulukuussa 2025 annettiin pitkän ajan, siis lähes koko talvea koskeva sääennuste.

Sen mukaan sää on poikkeuksellisen lämmin ja sateinen. Monille saattoi tulla mieleen eteläisen Suomen talvi 2019/2020, jolloin ainakaan meikäläinen ei tehnyt kertaakaan lumitöitä.

No, se ennuste meni kyllä ihan päin persettä.

Kylmää on ollut ja luntakin on piisannut.

Olen ottanut sen asenteen, että talvisista olosuhteista otetaan kaikki mahdollinen irti.

Luin pari päivää sitten sääpalvelu Forecan nettisivulta uutisen, joka kertoi “Euroopan keskipitkien sääennusteiden keskuksen (ECMWF) julkaissen kolmen kuukauden ennusteen helmi–huhtikuun jaksolle”.

“Ennusteen mukaan jakso helmikuusta huhtikuuhun on koko Suomessa reilusti tavanomaista helmi–huhtikuuta lämpimämpi”.

Ans kattoo, kuinka tuon ennusteen käy. Ainakin 10 päivän ennuste näyttää kylmältä…

Tähän loppuun vielä yksi huomio säästä; torstaina aurinko lämmitti jo mukavasti, vaikka ulkona olikin viileää.

Ja valoisa aika on lisääntynyt jo kahdella tunnilla:-)

Expedition work is not all that different from running a company.

Let’s take one example.

Company executives read and analyze various forecasts in order to navigate past shoals and storm centers.

Expeditions… or at least those I’ve been involved in… operate in rather challenging conditions.

We, too, have to avoid the shoals — otherwise there will be no crowing of the rooster of glory.

Getting weather forecasts is absolutely essential , especially on a glacier.

I have to admit that those 20 years spent abroad have left their mark.

Even here back home (Nuuksio, Finland), I follow weather forecasts like a hawk.

In December 2025, a long-term forecast was issued, covering almost the entire winter.

According to it, the weather was supposed to be exceptionally mild and rainy. For many, it may have brought to mind the winter of 2019/2020 in southern Finland, when at least I didn’t shovel snow even once.

Well, that forecast went completely off the rails.

It’s been cold, and there’s been plenty of snow.

I’ve adopted the attitude that we should make the most of winter conditions while they last.

A couple of days ago, I read an article on the website of the weather service Foreca, reporting that “the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has published a three-month forecast for the February–April period.”

“According to the forecast, the period from February to April will be clearly warmer than average across all of Finland.”

Let’s see how that forecast turns out. At least the 10-day forecast looks cold…

One final observation about the weather: on Thursday, the sun was already pleasantly warm, even though the air was still chilly.

And daylight has already increased by two hours 🙂
