Eventually, the lower layers were compressed under immense pressure and turned into glacial ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlands of central Iceland and its volcanic terrain provided ideal conditions \u2014 higher elevation means lower temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short: the future of Iceland\u2019s glaciers is bleak unless climate warming is brought under control quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of Iceland\u2019s glaciers may disappear within 100\u2013200 years if current warming continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smaller glaciers may vanish within decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, Iceland officially declared its first glacier, Okj\u00f6kull, dead \u2014 a symbolic but scientifically significant moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am therefore running across at least the three largest glaciers in Iceland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first of these, and the largest, Vatnaj\u00f6kull, is already done.
