Mr. Maud on kiivennyt Everestin huipulle, soutanut Atlantin halki, juossut kanssamme Kalaharin autiomaan halki ja paljon paljon muuta kivaa.https:\/\/www.gregmaud.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gregin kanssa on ollut mukava seikkailla ja on ihan mahdollista, ett\u00e4 yhdist\u00e4mme tulevina vuosina taas voimamme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henkil\u00f6kemiamme pelaavat hyvin ja pid\u00e4mme ns. tyhmist\u00e4 jutuista, joita muut eiv\u00e4t v\u00e4ltt\u00e4m\u00e4tt\u00e4 oikein ymm\u00e4rr\u00e4. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 yksi esimerkki\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olimme huhtikuun alussa 2013 Gr\u00f6nlannin Tasiilaqissa ja odotimme lentoamme Isortoqiin, josta siis j\u00e4\u00e4tik\u00f6n ylitys alkaa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

K\u00e4vimme Tasiilaqissa er\u00e4\u00e4ss\u00e4 leipomossa ostamassa herkkuja ja sen yhteydess\u00e4 huomasimme erikoislaatuisen leiv\u00e4n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olemme molemmat katsoneet Tom Hanksin t\u00e4hditt\u00e4m\u00e4n \u201cCast Away\u201d-elokuvan, jossa Hanks haaksirikkoutuu asuttamattomalle saarelle seuranaan Wilson-merkkinen lentopallo, jolle Hanks piirt\u00e4\u00e4 (verest\u00e4) ihmisen kasvot. Wilsonin ja Hanksin v\u00e4lille kehkeytyy koomis-traaginen suhde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ostimme leipomosta Wilsonin mukaan. Tanskalainen retkikuntakaverimme Jens-Erik oli n\u00e4hnyt my\u00f6s elokuvan, mutta ei ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4nyt lainkaan motiiviamme ostaa leip\u00e4 mukaan ja kantaa se aina Isortoqiin asti. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retkikuntien aikana syntyy todella outoa huumoria, josta ei kannata kirjoja kirjoitella. Ne vaan on sen verran kryptisi\u00e4 juttuja, jotka eiv\u00e4t ulkopuolisille avaudu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olen sit\u00e4 mielt\u00e4, ett\u00e4 pitk\u00e4t ja raskaat retkikunnat sopivat paremmin veitikoille kun tosikoille. Teemme hommia tosissaan, mutta emme vakavissamme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My adventure buddy Greg is on his way to India to start a couple of weeks of adventure in a \u201crickshaw.\u201d He plans to drive it across India.

Mr. Maud has climbed to the summit of Everest, rowed across the Atlantic, run across the Kalahari Desert with us, and done many, many other fun things.

It\u2019s been great adventuring with Greg, and it\u2019s entirely possible that in the coming years we\u2019ll join forces again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our personal chemistry works well, and we enjoy so-called silly things that others don\u2019t necessarily quite understand. Here\u2019s one example\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early April 2013 we were in Tasiilaq, Greenland, waiting for our flight to Isortoq, where our glacier crossing was to begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While in Tasiilaq we visited a bakery to buy some treats, and there we noticed a very unusual loaf of bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were cuts crisscrossing the crust, and it looked exactly as if someone had tried to fold a human face into it. We looked at the bread and said in unison, \u201cWilson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had both seen the Tom Hanks film Cast Away<\/em>, in which Hanks is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island with a Wilson-brand volleyball as his companion, onto which Hanks draws a human face (with blood). A comic-tragic relationship develops between Wilson and Hanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We bought Wilson from the bakery and took him with us. Our Danish expedition teammate, Jens-Erik, had also seen the movie, but he didn\u2019t understand at all our motive for buying the bread and carrying it all the way to Isortoq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bread was given a place of honor at our accommodation in Isortoq, and we talked to it like, \u201cGood morning, Wilson, how are you today?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think Jens-Erik would have made a run for it at that point if he could have. He was so confused by our antics (and others as well)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we were doing the final packing for our glacier journey, we realized that Wilson wouldn\u2019t fit. All the bags and packs were already completely full. With heavy hearts we had to leave our good friend behind in Isortoq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During expeditions, truly strange humor is born, stuff you really shouldn\u2019t write books about. It\u2019s simply too cryptic, and outsiders wouldn\u2019t understand it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my opinion, long and demanding expeditions are better suited to jokers than to overly serious people. We do things seriously, but not solemnly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
