What\u2019s that man writing about Christmas for, when it\u2019s not until next week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, I just couldn\u2019t wait to save this story for next Wednesday, because in 2008 I spent the whitest Christmas of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Antarctica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I flew to the world\u2019s largest glacier in early December, and the plan was to return to Finland just before the Christmas holidays\u2014but no such luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were stuck in Antarctica because stormy winds prevented the airplane from reaching our camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Altogether there were about 70 of us at the Patriot Hills base camp: mountaineers, runners, kite skiers, and other adventurers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The camp staff decided to organize a Christmas celebration for us\u2014and they really did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas morning began with a short church service led by a real priest, a professor of religious studies named Delbert from the USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The camp equipment also included a plastic Christmas tree with modest decorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas Day ended with a wonderful dinner prepared by a Norwegian chef named Ronny, and the tasty food was washed down with Chilean red wine. For some of the group, the festivities continued almost until morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We finally left Antarctica for our journey home on December 27 and arrived in Finland on December 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etel\u00e4nantereella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lensin maailman suurimalle j\u00e4\u00e4tik\u00f6lle joulukuun alkupuolella ja tarkoitus oli tulla takaisin Suomeen just ennen joulunpyhi\u00e4, mutta katin kontit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olimme jumissa Etel\u00e4napamantereella, sill\u00e4 myrskyis\u00e4t tuulet estiv\u00e4t lentokoneen saapumisen leiriimme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meit\u00e4 oli kaiken kaikkiaan n.70 henke\u00e4 Patriot Hills-perusleiriss\u00e4; vuorikiipeilij\u00f6it\u00e4, juoksijoita ja leijahiiht\u00e4ji\u00e4 ja muita seikkailijoita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leirin henkil\u00f6kunta p\u00e4\u00e4tti j\u00e4rjest\u00e4\u00e4 meille joulujuhlan ja sen he tekiv\u00e4tkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joulup\u00e4iv\u00e4n aamu alkoi lyhyell\u00e4 jumalanpalveluksella, jonka suoritti ihan oikea pappi, Delbert-niminen uskontotieteiden professori from USA.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leirin varustuksiin kuului my\u00f6s muovinen joulukuusi hienoinen koristeineen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joulup\u00e4iv\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4ttyi upeaan illalliseen, jonka loihti norjalainen kokki Ronny ja maittava muona huuhdeltiin alas chilel\u00e4isell\u00e4 punaviinill\u00e4. Juhlat jatkuivat osalla porukkaa melkein aamuun asti. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u00e4hdimme viimein Etel\u00e4napamantereelta kotimatkalle 27.12.ja saavuimme Suomeen 31.12….<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sain joululahjaksi \u201cjuoksija-figuurin\u201d vihre\u00e4paitaiselta hepulta, joka toimii leirin mekaanikkona (nimi on unohtunut). \u201cPatsas\u201d on olohuoneessa kunniapaikalla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I received a Christmas present\u2014a \u201crunner figurine” from a guy in a green shirt who worked as the camp mechanic (his name has slipped my mind). The \u201cstatue\u201d now has a place of honor in the living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suhtauduin jouluun asianmukaisella hartaudella ja vakavuudella (kampa oli j\u00e4\u00e4nyt Suomeen).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I approached Christmas with the appropriate devotion and seriousness (the comb had been left behind in Finland).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
